Local military can apply for 'ultimate financial gift'
Three military families will win six months of mortgage payments and other incentives

By Shannon Humphrey, The Daily Press - 9/24/2010

Three military families can win six months of mortgage payments and be placed in positions with Bath Fitter in a program offered by a Minneapolis-based financial company.

Gradient, an investment company, is spearheading the program through its Gradient Gives Back Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the company's community outreach program.

Last year, Gradient offered financial makeovers to families hardest hit by the bad economy as part of its community outreach. Now they're targeting those who are currently serving in the military or who have served.

Military families from across the nation can apply by visiting http://www.gradientgivesback.com/markshelby, and clicking on Apply Today. The deadline to apply is the first week in December.

Mark Shelby, a financial adviser with TriQuest Equity Management in Chesapeake, is partnering with the foundation. He will provide free financial planning, on his end, to a local military family if they're chosen.

"I do a lot of pro-bono work for the Aid and Assistance Program, helping veterans that have to go into assisted living homes," said Shelby. "I help them fill out the paperwork to make sure it's done correctly, and do so free of charge. So working with Gradient to award military families with free financial planning seemed like a good fit and way to give back to the community."

In addition to awarding six months worth of mortgage payments and other financial incentives to three families, 30 military men and women will be selected to attend the three-day Flawless Execution University. The training, which will take place in Atlanta in December, is being sponsored by Afterburner Inc., a company that utilizes business principles inspired by the military, as a way to change the way people do business.

Over three days, the course covers everything from how to manage debt, to tax advisory services, and how to transition between careers. Top candidates from the training course will be eligible for corporate positions with Bath Fitter, beginning in January 2011.

A panel will decide which military families qualify for the mortgage payments, as well as who will attend the three-day program in Atlanta.

"I just want to encourage the military community we have to get out there and apply for these programs," Shelby said.

"The more that apply, the better the chances will be of someone from this area winning and ultimately spreading awareness for this cause," he said.

"We're in the middle of two wars, and we still have a lot of people affected by these conflicts, so whatever we can do to try and help these military men and women that serve our country is a good thing," he said.
